Two of the Christmas cakes available exclusively at Checkers this festive season came out tops in the latest Sunday Times Tried & Tested Food Awards.
An independent panel put major retailers’ Christmas cakes to the test in a blind tasting. Cakes were rated on appearance, aroma, taste, quantity of fruit versus cake and whether the taster would buy it.
The judges concluded that Checkers’ Limited Edition Festive Fruit Cake was the best plain Christmas cake and its Limited Edition Iced Festive Fruit Cake was the best iced Christmas cake.
The Checkers Limited Edition Festive Fruit Cake retails at R89.99 for 800g and was also the most affordable of the plain fruit cakes tested across major retailers.
