​The nationwide nomination process for paying tribute to the nation's outstanding women achievers in the 2004 Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Woman of the Year drew to a close on Friday, 21 May 2004 and the panel of judges, comprising 27 high profile South Africans, faced with the challenge of selecting the most exceptional women in the country, will be announced on Monday, 14 June 2004. 

The judging sessions comprise two rounds of adjudication to determine the category finalists and winners. These will be selected via a process of personal interviews chaired by High Court Judge, Lucy Mailula. Finalists will be announced on Thursday, 1 July 2004. 

Thousands of high calibre nominations have been received in the nine categories of the Award, including the new category of Social Services. The other categories of the Award are business entrepreneurship, media & communications, arts & culture, science & technology, health, education, sport and community affairs. Each category winner will receive R10 000 in prize money and share the title of 2004 Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Women of the Year.
