The Shoprite Group has once again been awarded for excellence and popularity amongst consumers in the recently announced 2014 The Times / Sowetan Retail Awards.  Its flagship brand, Shoprite, once again took first place in the Grand Prix category and was voted the number one Grocery Store. The chain also came second in the Household Appliance category, up one place from 2013 and third in the Specialist Entertainment category.

MediRite moved into second place (last year third) in the Specialist Pharmaceutical Outlets category, with LiquorShop remaining in third place in the Liquor Stores category. House & Home also retained the third spot in the Specialist Furniture Stores category.

The seventh Times Sowetan Retail Awards survey, conducted by TNS South Africa, evaluated 20 categories ranging from groceries, furniture, appliances, clothing, cellphones and jewellery stores, among others to determine which retailers are most successfully garnering consumer spend.

The survey is based on 2,750 interviews conducted with South African adults aged 18 years and over, with 2,000 interviews in metropolitan SA and 750 interviews in non-metropolitan areas.

The Shoprite chain is the Group’s core business and serves the mass middle market (predominantly LSM 4 - 7). According to the latest research the Shoprite brand alone serves nearly 22 million shoppers, representing 58% of adults in South Africa.
