Only ten of the best South African boerewors-makers remain standing to face each other and impress a judging panel of food experts in the 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors grand finale at Sun City’s Valley of Waves on 4 October.
The competition has proven to be as popular as ever this year. More than a thousand of the country’s best boerewors-makers had to battle it out for the ten best recipes to be selected. To add to this year’s excitement, the winners will be donating a year’s supply of Championship Boerewors to a school of their choice!
In Sun City it will be decided who will drive away with a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider and the sought after 2014 Boerewors title! The winner and runners-up will also receive gift hampers from Coca-Cola, All Gold and Simba.
The ten finalists for the Sun City grand finale are:
• Eastern Cape – Bheki Tshezi from Mthatha
• Western Cape – Abraham Smith from Cape Town
• Northern Cape – Gloria Sekuketse from Kimberley
• Free State – Hennie Botha from Bloemfontein
• KwaZulu-Natal – Tristan Lucke from Durban
• Limpopo – Koos Van Dyk from Polokwane
• Mpumalanga – Andries Gama from Nelspruit
• North West – Tlokes Nkomo from Rustenburg
• Gauteng – Gerrie Gouws from Meyerton
• Gauteng – Chantel Gouws from Vereeniging
Top food experts will act as official judges during the final at Sun City and make sure that only the best of the best is selected as the 2014 Championship Boerewors. They are Martin Kobald (award winning chef and Honorary Life President of the South African Chefs Association), Carmen Niehaus (YOU and Huisgenoot Food Editor – for more than 25 years – and author of more than 20 cookbooks), Arnold Tanzer (Sunday Times Chef of the Year 2008, culinary producer for MasterChef SA), Francois Ferreira (SA food evangelist, co-owner of the Eden School of Culinary Art), Jenny Morris (radio and TV presenter, author, celebrity chef, known as the “Giggling Gourmet”) and Thuli Gogela (Mzansi Style Cuisine food blogger and product developer).
Brümilda van Rensburg and Pedro Kruger will be the comperes for Championship Boerewors grand finale. Brümilda and Pedro will be joined on stage by some of South Africa’s best-loved entertainers such as Adam Tas, Heinz Winkler, Andriëtte Norman, Ray Dylan, Adam and Emo Adams.
The 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors will receive the South African Chefs Association’s Seal of Approval, guaranteeing that the ingredients for South Africa’s best loved boerewors are of the highest quality. The country’s many loyal boerewors fans can meanwhile start preparing for yet another taste sensation, because the 2014 Championship Boerewors produced according to the winning boerewors recipe will hit the shelves of Checkers, Checkers Hyper and Shoprite stores countrywide, on 10 October.
