The Group's core price-fighting brand, serving customers in the mass middle-income market.

As the Group’s original and flagship brand, Shoprite is the biggest retailer in South Africa with a strong footprint in Africa. Affordable and accessible, Shoprite is a full-service supermarket where customers can do their shopping, pay their bills, receive government grant payouts and, in several select stores, collect their monthly prescription medication.

Brand overview

Shoprite’s story starts with the purchase of an eight-store grocery chain in 1979. The brand first developed in South Africa and expanded into Africa from 1990 with the opening of its first non-RSA supermarket in Windhoek, Namibia. Since then, this award-winning retail brand has grown to include hundreds of stores across the African continent.

The Shoprite brand strives to provide low-cost goods and services without compromising on quality. Apart from a selection of quality private labels, Shoprite’s house brand – Ritebrand – offers price leadership on the shelf without compromising on quality.

How we are adding value: We recognise that the high cost of transport limits the number of shop visits our customers can afford to make. By extending our shopping hours and providing a onestop full-service offering, we have increased the convenience of shopping in our stores.

Added services

Shoprite stores offer various in-house service departments including bakeries, delis, fish shops, wine sections and meat markets. Selected stores also offer other convenience services, including:

  • Money Market offers customers the convenience of purchasing domestic air tickets, booking bus tickets, making utility account payments, conducting money transfers, and more.
  • Medirite pharmacies provide easily accessible and affordable healthcare services, enabling customers to collect their prescription medicine while shopping.
  • Computicket, where customers can buy tickets to various leisure and sporting events, as well as tickets for travelling.
  • Shoprite LiquorShop can be found adjacent to selected Shoprite supermarkets, allowing shoppers to purchase a range of local and international beverages at supermarket prices.
  • Virtual grocery vouchers can be bought online and sent straight to the recipient’s cellphone. These vouchers can be redeemed at any Shoprite store.
