Jay Behari Ram from Umhlanga Ridge in KwaZulu-Natal was recently named the Shoprite Group’s Divisional Manager of the Year.
As a child, Ram dreamt of serving his community and wanted to become a policeman. His career however took a different path when he started working for a retail company straight out of school.
He joined Shoprite in 1990 as a Trainee Manager. Ram’s tenacity and dedication saw him climb the corporate ladder from Assistant Manager to Branch Manager, a position he held for more than 13 years, before being promoted to Regional Manager.
In 2013 he took up the position of Deputy Divisional Manager and in 2017 Ram was promoted to Shoprite’s Divisional Manager for KwaZulu-Natal.

Ram feels strongly that this award is the result of a collective effort by the entire Shoprite KwaZulu-Natal division.
“The reward is a tribute to our combined effort. We’ve been through an extremely challenging period – with the unrest that rocked KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng, followed by the devastating floods earlier this year – but together we have risen from the despair. We’re a team of ordinary people, but together we can achieve the extraordinary.”
