The Shoprite Group recently visited five schools in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal – home to one of the retailer’s largest distribution centres – to introduce Grade 11-12 learners to its bursary and skills development programmes.
More than 1500 learners received detailed information about the Group’s comprehensive bursary programme, which supported 206 students at a cost of R16 million in the last financial year. They were also provided with stationery packs sponsored by Eyesizwe Mining Development Trust to assist them with their schoolwork.
In addition, learners were introduced to the Group’s Retail Readiness programme, an extensive retail skills and training programme which is aimed at enhancing the career options of South Africa’s unskilled and unemployed youth.
The Group also hosted a recruitment drive in Hazelmere, with hundreds of young people between the ages of 18 and 33 applying for an in-store workplace experience programme made available through a partnership with the Youth Employment Service (YES). The 50 successful YES learners, as well as an additional 50 Money Market Account agents, are set to start working at local Shoprite supermarkets in mid-June 2023.
