After a major refurbishment, Checkers Hyper FreshX Gateway now provides customers with a superior shopping experience, and created 35 new jobs in addition to the 380 people already employed by the store.
At over 11 000 m², it is the largest Checkers Hyper supermarket in South Africa and this state-of-the art retail destination boasts brand new attractions for customers, including:
- KZN’s first standalone Susu bubble tea shop which serves authentic and fresh Taiwanese bubble tea;
- A specialist spice bar where customers can handpick the highest quality, authentic spice blends from the meticulously formed spice pyramids;
- A sit-down sushi bar;
- An instore Krispy Kreme;
- A large fresh fruit and vegetable section where customers can select their own ingredients for freshly squeezed juice;
- An instore Little Me for all parents’ needs;
- An Outdoor section with a large product selection including premium Traeger grills, and
- A ToolX with a wide variety of products for all DIY enthusiasts.

Additional instore departments include pool and gardening sections, TechX and an extensive selection of small appliances including Snomaster ice makers, Nespresso coffee machines as well as Smeg toasters and kettles.
The Money Market counter offers customers a wide range of value-added services, including payment of municipal accounts, money transfers, prepaid data, airtime or electricity, purchasing gift cards or savings stamps, buying tickets, and even taking out insurance.
The store is managed by 23-year retail veteran, Charmaine Achary, who started working for the retailer as a cashier when she was a 17-year-old high school student. Just three years after matriculating, she was promoted to Trainee Manager, rapidly moving through the ranks to first be appointed as a Branch Manager in 2015.
Checkers Hyper Gateway’s trading hours are 08:00 – 20:00 from Mondays to Sundays.
