Shoprite Checkers reiterates its decision made on Monday this week that its Shoprite, Checkers and Usave supermarkets in South Africa will be closed to the public on Sunday, 15 December 2013 out of respect for the memory of the late president Nelson Mandela.

In confirming the announcement, Shoprite Group CEO Whitey Basson, said: “We can think of no action that will be more appropriate to demonstrate the respect Madiba deserves as our country’s greatest statesman in history. By closing our supermarkets, we are offering our admiration and appreciation for his life’s work and we are simply not prepared to sacrifice honouring Mr. Mandela’s memory for the sake of short term financial gains.”

This move will allow staff to participate in the official funeral proceedings in Qunu via national media and will empower them with the freedom to choose how they wish to celebrate Mr Mandela’s life on this historical day.

To assist loyal customers with their long weekend and festive season shopping requirements, Shoprite, Checkers and Usave supermarkets will offer extended hours on Friday, 13 December, Saturday, 14 December and will be open on the public holiday, Monday, 16 December.
