Foodworld now in Shoprite stable

Shoprite Checkers has announced that it has purchased a chain of 13 retail supermarkets known as Foodworld and 4 small wholesale outlets doing business as Saveworld. The transaction was subject to the approval of the competition Commission and is now secured. 

The chain operates largely in the middle to lower-income market in the Cape Peninsula and has one store in Paarl. It mainly serves the Cape’s Muslim community, providing Halaal food and services. 

Commenting on the acquisition the Shoprite group, Deputy-Managing Director, Carel Goosen, said the acquisition of the businesses will have a minimal effect on the Group’s national market share. 

“It has, however, presented the group with an opportunity to move into areas in the Western Cape in which the brand was under-represented. The stores will all be converted to the Shoprite brand after the December 2005 trading period. They will continue to serve the Muslim community and also offer Halaal goods and services,” he concluded.
