The Championship Boerewors crown for 2007 was awarded to a KwaZulu-Natal butcher in Sun City’s Valley of Waves this past Saturday during a tense grand finale. Jeffrey Soobramoney (on photo left) of Phoenix competed against nine other provincial finalists with a unique recipe for traditional boerewors to be marketed by South Africa’s leading supermarket group over the next twelve months, and walked away with a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider and a host of other prizes.
Second place in Shoprite Checkers’ Champion Boerewors Competition was awarded to John Miller of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape and Pieter Jooste of Coligny in North West took third place.
Now in its thirteenth year, the Championship Boerewors competition has proven to be as popular as ever this year, with entries up almost ten percent. More than a thousand of the country’s best boerewors makers have been locking horns and braai-tongs since July, competing in more than 80 regional rounds country-wide, before the ten best recipes were selected during the various provincial clashes in September.
Shoprite Group marketing director Brian Weyers says that the competition is once again providing the supermarket group with another unique traditional boerewors recipe that will appeal to lovers of boerewors. “Our customers rely on Shoprite Checkers to surprise them with a brand new taste-sensation each year and due to the rigorous process of elimination of the vast number of quality recipes this year; I trust that we will not disappoint them. We look forward to presenting consumers with a Championship Boerewors of outstanding quality in Shoprite and Checkers meat markets as from 17 October this year.”
The panel of judges comprised top food experts Martin Kobald, Carmen Niehaus, Justine Drake, Citrum Khumalo, Jenny Morris, Francois Ferreira, Pieter Veldsman, Dorah Sitole, Kevin Gibbs and Jeff Schueremans, and according to them, the decision on the winning boerewors was unanimous.
The 2007 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors will receive the South African Chefs Association’s Seal of Approval, ensuring that South Africa’s best loved boerewors brand is the best of the very best!
