Many schools and libraries in South Africa cannot supply their communities with proper reading material, due to a lack of sufficient funds. The RSG/KKNK Book Collection campaign addresses this serious shortage by collecting books for underprivileged communities. The campaign, now in its twelfth year, has through the years collected and distributed more than a million books.

Shoprite Checkers, RSG and ABSA KKNK collect books for needy schools 2009

South Africa’s retail giant, Shoprite Checkers, has always been on the foreground in supporting various campaigns aimed at furthering the education of our country’s children. In support of the 2009 RSG/KKNK Book Collection campaign, Shoprite and Checkers stores are providing collection points in their supermarkets for books customers no longer use. The public is invited to contribute to the campaign by donating all types of books – fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, children’s literature, encyclopaedias and reference books, old and new, at any Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper store countrywide till 30 April 2008. The books can be deposited into marked trolleys located at the entrance of the stores.

The 2009 Book Collection campaign was launched on-air during Oggend met RSG on Saturday 4 April from the Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) stall at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) in Oudtshoorn, and will run until 30 April 2009. All books collected during this time will be sorted and distributed to needy schools, libraries and community organizations by the Vryburgers Diensorganisasie.

Through you generous donation you will be touching the hearts and enriching the minds of those for whom each book is an unimaginable treasure. Every book read is the next step towards building a road to knowledge and success that is easy and attainable for all South Africans - therefore, please donate as many books as you can!
