The experts have started their search for South Africa’s No.1 Boerewors, and hundreds of wannabe Champs are already sweating it out in kitchens all over South Africa as they try to perfect the art of making the ideal traditional Boerie.
Do you have a secret boerewors recipe just waiting to be discovered – maybe a tried-and-true family recipe that has been passed from generation to generation, or the result of you own love for experimentation and flair for flavours? If you think you can make magic with boerewors that will dazzle the likes of food-connoisseur, Nataniël, and his panel of 4 food experts, then hurry up and get your entry ready for this year’s Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition. Entries close at 5 pm on Friday, 10 July!
Shoprite and Checkers’ Championship Boerewors is a traditional boerewors and there are guidelines for making the real thing. All recipes entered will be validated against these guidelines by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) who will take charge of the entire judging process this year. If you want to qualify for the competition, you have to ensure your recipe is valid.
The boerewors recipes entered every year are always of exceptional quality. This makes the judges’ task extremely challenging and they find it increasingly more difficult to choose a winner. That is why entertainer and passionate food legend, Nataniël, has been called in to help ensure that only the best boerewors carries the Championship-crown. To assist him and SACA in the search for the 2009 Championship Boerewors, Nataniël furthermore called together four of the country’s most well-known chefs - award-winning restauranteur, Peter Veldsman, renowned food editor, Dorah Sitole, acclaimed restaurant owner, Reuben Riffel, and Sunday Times Chef of the Year, Arnold Tanzer
After closing of entries on 10 July, the next step in the quest for Boerewors Champ 2009 is the approximately 80 regional rounds that will be held countrywide on Saturdays, 15, 22 and 29 August. The regional winners will take part in provincial rounds scheduled for Saturday, 19 September.
The grand finale takes place at the Valley of Waves in Sun City on Saturday, 03 October when the provincial winners have the last opportunity to fight it out for the Boerewors Crown. The new Boerewors Champion will drive away in a vehicle truly fit for a champion – a brand new TOYOTA Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider! The runner-up and second runner-up also do not go home empty handed as they each receive holiday vouchers from All Gold to the value of R10 000 and R5 000 respectively, cash vouchers from Coke-Cola as well as product vouchers from Simba. Finalists will enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City, including airfares, tickets to Skouspel and accommodation.
