The Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition launched on 18 May and the hunt is officially on for South Africa's top boerewors-maker for 2009! Apart from earning the sought-after Boerewors Champion title, the winner will also drive away in a brand new TOYOTA Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider!
Whether you believe in thick boerewors or thin, like it crammed with spices or fragranced with fresh herbs, whether you believe in letting the boerie cool off first or deem it best when eaten straight from the flames, everybody believes they have the secret to preparing and cooking the tastiest and juiciest real boerewors.
Could your special secret be exceptional enough to earn you the title of South Africa’s new Boerewors Champion?
Making boerewors is serious business! That is exactly why South Africa’s entertainer extraordinaire and passionate food-legend, Nataniël, appointed 4 food experts to help him in his search for anyone in the country who believes he or she has a boerewors recipe unique and tasty, to enter.
Shoprite and Checkers’ Championship Boerewors must be a traditional boerewors and there are strict guidelines for making the real thing. The South African Chefs Association (SACA), recognised as the authority on food in South Africa, will be in charge of the entire judging process, and ensure that entrants follow the specific guidelines for making the very best traditional boerewors. If you want to qualify for the competition, you have to ensure your recipe is valid.
Lending their culinary expertise to Nataniël and SACA, the 4 connoisseur judges - award-winning restauranteur, Peter Veldsman, renowned food editor, Dorah Sitole, acclaimed restaurant owner, Reuben Riffel, and Sunday Times Chef of the Year, Arnold Tanzer – will help to ensure that this year’s Championship Boerewors not only adheres to their guidelines, but is a true winner in all regards. Leading up to the final approximately 80 regional rounds will take place countrywide during August. Winners of the regional rounds will compete in ten provincial rounds on Saturday, 19 September 2009.
The highlight of the competition is the Grand Finale at Sun City on 03 October 2009 where all ten provincial finalists get together for the grand cook-off to establish who will wear the Boerewors Crown. Finalists will enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City, including airfares, tickets to Skouspel and accommodation.
Shoprite and Checkers is proud of South Africa’s boerewors heritage and to celebrate this the supermarket group annually hosts the Championship Boerewors Competition which searches for the country’s best traditional boerewors recipe. The group is renowned for the excellent quality of the meat available at their Meat Markets and they are continuously looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer customers the best. The annual Boerewors Championship is instrumental in achieving that goal.
Entry forms are available at any Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper Meat Market or online at www.championshipboerewors.co.za.
