It's a culinary battle!

In kitchens all across the country 1063 boerewors-fundis are getting down to the serious business of making their special traditional boerewors for the regional rounds of one of South Africa’s fiercest culinary battles - the 2011 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition. The nerve-racking regional clashes take place on Saturdays 13, 20 and 27 August at selected locations countrywide. 

An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will judge each regional round where prospective Boerewors Champions have to braai 1 kg of their own-recipe boerewors that will be judged raw and cooked. More than 400 chefs will be tasting more than 45 000 pieces of boerewors to find the 2011 Championship Boerewors!! 

Regional round participants need to go all out to impress the judges with their boerewors-making and -cooking skills as only the first place winners of each of the 90 regional rounds will go on to battle it out against their provincial counterparts in ten provincial rounds that take place on Saturday, 17 September. 

The competition ends on Saturday, 8 October when the provincial winners compete in braai-offs at Sun City’s Valley of Waves in a vigorous grand finale. The Boerewors Champion will earn the sought-after 2011 Boerewors Crown and also drive away in a brand new TOYOTA Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider!

The supermarket chains’ meat markets are famous for the outstanding quality of their meat and the group is continually on the lookout for new recipes and ideas so consumers can enjoy only the best quality and variety. The annual Championship Boerewors competition plays a key role in helping the Group to achieve this aim. 

Members of the public are invited to go and watch as the boerewors-fundis battle it out in the regionals. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors will be entertained by well-known entertainers, various lucky draws and giveaways will be held, and Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and competitions.
