Shoprite and Checkers annually presents the Toy 4 Toy Campaign that urges customers to donate new or used toys to needy children. From 12 November until 7 December customers could make a contribution by buying or bringing toys and placing them in the Toy 4 Toy trolleys in front of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores countrywide.

Through the generous donations received from members of the public, thousands of toys were again collected this year – 8584 to be exact! The toys will be distributed to children throughout South Africa by the Nataniël Progress Project and BADISA.

As part of the Toy 4 Toy campaign, Shoprite and Checkers also hosted Christmas parties across the country, for approximately a thousand children who find themselves in children’s homes and other care institutions over the festive period.

At the Western Cape children’s party, held on the last day of the campaign, 7 December, the children were dresses up in brand new Toy 4 Toy t-shirts and fun Christmas hats, and treated to fun-filled activities at the Bugz Family Playpark, including self-defence lessons and a magic show. Here they were treated to lunch, slush-puppies, snacks and sweets, and enjoyed the magnificent indoor play area and the huge outdoor playground with its variety of rides and slides. Thereafter it was time for a visit from Father Christmas who brought each child a special gift, backpack that contained stationery, toys and lunch boxes filled with tasty treats.

The children were thrilled and could not stop talking about the special outing and all their wonderful treats.

For every toy that consumers donate, Shoprite and Checkers promise to give something too. In keeping with this promise, Shoprite and Checkers presented BADISA and the Nataniël Progress Project with a donation of R100 000 each on the day. Nataniël as well as Annemarie Bezuidenhout from BADISA attended the Christmas Party.

Thank you to everyone who donated a toy and made it possible for Shoprite, Checkers, BADISA and the Nataniël Progress Project, to bring joy to the lives of so many needy children this festive season.
