Shoprite and Checkers presented both Badisa and the Nataniël Progress Project with a donation of R100 000 each as part of its annual Toy for Toy initiative for the festive season. The event coincided with the supermarket chains’ Western Cape Christmas party for less fortunate children, which took place at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront on Thursday, 12 December.
Shoprite and Checkers annually present the Toy for Toy campaign that urges customers to donate new or used toys to needy children during the festive season. Through the generous donations from members of the public, 8900 toys were collected this year and will be distributed to children throughout South Africa by the Nataniël Progress Project and Badisa.
As part of the Toy for Toy campaign, Shoprite and Checkers host Christmas parties for less fortunate children over the festive period. Seventy-five foster children aged 5-9 years from Elsies River and surrounding communities attended the Western Cape party where Annemarie Bezuidenhout and Nataniël received the donations on behalf of the two organisations.
Between 15 October and 6 December 2013 all South African citizens could contribute by buying or bringing toys and placing them in the Toy for Toy trolleys in front of all Checkers, Checkers Hyper and Shoprite stores countrywide.
Children attending the party received T-shirts, drawstring bags with a lunch box and stationery kits and were treated to fun-filled activities at the Aquarium, including guided tours, craft sessions and an educational puppet show themed “Keep the beach clean” and each child also received a specially wrapped Christmas gift.
