After a nationwide search George Baloyi (52) from Soshanguve, Gauteng, was voted the winner of the prestigious 2015 Championship Boerewors competition. His boerewors recipe will now be used for Championship Boerewors sold in all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores where the equivalent of 8 220km boerewors – the distance between Cape Town and Mumbai (India) – was sold during the group’s previous financial year (ended 30 June 2015).
Baloyi’s name was revealed in Cape Town shortly after 13:00 on Tuesday 15 September by well known South African personalities Marc Lottering, Corné Krige and Tol Ass Mo. Weather interfered with their plans to reveal the winner’s name whilst sky diving. Nonetheless, they raised R100 000 for charity and rugby legend Naas Botha even came out of early Twitter retirement in support of #SAsNo1.
This was Baloyi’s fifth entry into the competition, but the first time he made it into the final. Baloyi started making boerewors 25 years ago when he worked at a butchery in Pretoria. Years of practice finally paid off when he received the amazing grand prize of a brand new Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45 following an extensive voting process by the South African public.
“I am very glad when the name came up and it said George, because I’m the only George here today! I made five different recipes and asked my friends and family to taste it – they told me this one was the winner.”
Baloyi’s recipe - South Africa’s number ONE boerewors - will be on sale in all Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide from 18 September – just in time to celebrate Heritage Day or be enjoyed whilst watching the Rugby World Cup!
The other two Championship Boerewors finalists were Phinah Maimela (37) from Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, and Ayanda Dyanse (28), from Humansdorp, Eastern Cape. All three finalists received gift hampers from sponsors Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba, as well as vouchers from Shoprite and Checkers stores.
