The Shoprite Group’s newly developed Matlapeng Centre in Devland, Gauteng opened its doors for trading earlier today. Local resident Mpho Kosa won a competition to name the shopping centre and was present at the opening of the centre’s new Shoprite supermarket.

While the development was underway, the retailer held a competition for residents to name the centre. Kosa suggested ‘matlapeng’, which means ‘a rocky place’ and won a R500 Shoprite shopping voucher in the process: “I’m over the moon. It’s an honour to have named the new centre.”

The Shoprite Group has a long history of taking hands with the communities in which it operates. “Our customers are at the core of our business and we saw finding a name for the centre as a wonderful opportunity to involve them in our planning process for their new supermarket. So we’re very proud of the fact that the Matlapeng Centre was named by a local resident, and that we’ve created a staggering 145 new jobs in the local community with the opening of our first Shoprite supermarket in Devland,” commented Neil Schreuder, Marketing Director for Shoprite Checkers.

To celebrate Shoprite Devland’s grand opening, a DJ entertained the crowds while customers were treated to great opening specials and numerous in-store competitions. One lucky winner even walked away with a brand new washing machine, microwave and fridge!

The new store will cater for all customers’ daily, weekly and monthly food and household requirements. Over and above a wide range of food and general merchandise such as outdoor, homeware and appliances, there are also a number of service departments including a hot and cold foods deli, bakery, fresh fruit and vegetable department, a Money Market counter as well as a LiquorShop.

Shoprite Devland promises customers a convenient shopping experience with a total of 17 pay points, 200 free parking bays and excellent security measures. Trading hours are 08:00 – 20:00 from Mondays to Sundays.

The Matlapeng Centre’s gross leasable area (GLA) is 5 100m² and other tenants include Pep and Jimmy’s Killer Fish.
