South Africans from around the country have, since the start of the national lockdown, made big and small contributions to grow the Shoprite Group’s Act for Change Fund to R1.2 million in support of the Solidarity Fund.
The supermarket group thanked its customers from both rural and urban areas when their contributions reached the R200 000 mark. The Group made the initial donation to reach out and help South Africans in these difficult times.
Contributions to the Act For Change Fund from small rural towns have been unprecedented. Kokstad, Ulundi and Nongoma in KwaZulu-Natal are the top three stores with the highest number of customer contributions to the Fund.
Anyone who would still like to donate to the Act For Change Fund, can do so at the till point in any Shoprite, Checkers or Usave store the next time they do their grocery shopping.
In addition to collecting donations for the Solidarity Fund, the retailer has distributed more than R3.9-million in surplus food since the start of the national lockdown. Shoprite’s Mobile Soup Kitchens have also supplied more than 60 000 meals to 116 beneficiary organisations since the implementation of the lockdown last month.
